Elephacts

We think elephants are rather fantastic animals, which is why we’ve got one as our official mascot! So much do we love them that we think everyone should know at least one fact about elephants! So we’ve compiled some elephacts to tell you all about these brilliant creatures!

Speak up!!
Despite having such large ears, elephants have very poor hearing. Their ears are used mostly to keep them cool.

Too hot for me!!
Elephants actually really dislike chillies- farmers in Africa use them to stop elephants eating their crops

Tiny-phants!
Fossil remains of dwarf elephants, a prehistoric relative of the elephant, have been found all over the world from Mediterranean islands to Indonesia. Some were only the size of a calf or large pig

Zzzzzzz
Elephants sleep standing up

Surfs up!!
Elephants are fantastic swimmers and are capable of swimming long distances using their trunk as a snorkel!

Wear sunscreen!
Elephants wallow in mud to give their skin a protective coating against the sun

Greedy guts!
Elephants spend about 16 hours a day eating and produce about 80lb of poop a day- something to take into consideration if you were thinking of getting one as a pet!

Holy Elephants
Elephants are considered sacred in many Asian cultures. They are used in religious ceremonies in Sri Lanka and white elephants are considered holy in Thailand. The Hindu god Ganesh is depicted with an elephant’s head

Eleaid iconNo- it’s not a fizzy drink made from elephants! Eleaid is a British charity working for the welfare and conservation of Asian Elephants. Asian Elephants are highly endangered and Chilli Elephant supports the work of this charity to protect them. Click here to find out more.
